The Whole Employee: Addressing Workplace Mental Health

The stigma surrounding mental health has made it a topic that is often avoided in the workplace. Yet, mental health is as important as physical health and workplace safety.

Bring up the topic of "mental health" in the workplace and expect to get a lot of uncomfortable looks and rapid change of subject. The topic may evoke images of an employee randomly shooting coworkers in a fit of anger or bizarre speech or behaviour that is frightening. Yet, stress is a mental health issues, and everyone experiences stress.

The stigma surrounding mental health is persistent, but The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is determined to keep a conversation going in the public forum. Canada is a leader in addressing mental health in the workplace and has developed the first National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace (the Standard).
