Statement by the Prime Minister on South Africa Freedom Day

Toronto-“Nelson Mandela will always be a symbol of liberation and freedom. His work, alongside countless others, to advance human rights and equality, champion democracy, and fight injustice laid the foundation for a new, democratic South Africa and inspired freedom movements around the world.

“Canada and South Africa share a strong and lasting bond, anchored by our shared values of inclusion, diversity, and democracy, and Canada’s leading role in the international fight against apartheid. Our two countries work closely together, through the United Nations, the G20, the Commonwealth and other organizations, to carry Nelson Mandela’s vision forward and build a more just, peaceful, and inclusive world.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the South African people on this milestone anniversary. Today, we are reminded of the power of individuals to change the arc of history, and the responsibility we all share to serve the world.”
