Agnes McLachlan Brings "The Working Mind" to
the City of Barrie

Agnes McLachlan is the wellness and abilities Management Specialist, Human Resources for the City of Barrie. Agnes has a passion for helping others succeed, and her focus on assisting people with special accommodation needs led her and her colleague Kim Hickling to implement "The Working Mind" learning and development program for city of Barrie employees, an initiative of The City. The program was developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and it was Agnes' passion for inclusion that motivated her to undertake and commit to offering this program to employees. Her strategy was to start with the people leaders, and the city is now offering the program to all of its employees.

Currently, Agnes is working on implementing abilities-focused accommodation strategies. The city has experienced greatly improved outcomes for employees returning to work after a work-related or non-work related absence. Agnes implemented a resilience-based model for all involved in the return to work process which includes internal support for employees and external resources. Her philosophy is that collaboration is the ideal strategy for bringing out the best in the employee-leader relationship.
