As Metrolinx’s first Chief Inclusion Officer Karima Hashmani led the development of the organization’s first Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Strategy which includes employees, customers and communities. The organization’s Strategy for 2023-2025 was informed through research and consultations with colleagues, 10 Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), and more than 20 partners from external organizations. It includes a vision statement, a robust communications plan, a monitoring and reporting plan, and progress reports to be shared with senior leadership and the Board.
Karima has accelerated the use of data to impact change and help better understand the employee experience. Overseeing employee engagement, she launched the first EDI Climate Survey and incorporated demographics into employee engagement surveys to help better understand the experience and sense of belonging of equity-deserving communities.
Karima has driven awareness on dates of significance through the development of inclusive guides and the importance of supporting ERGs and guided the establishment of an ERG governance model. Her work extends beyond the workplace, and includes thought leadership on AI and bias and embedding EDI into community and customer-facing initiatives.
With more than two decades of experience addressing complex EDI and human rights issues within education, social housing, and non-profit sectors. Karima has dedicated her career to amplifying voices, advancing systemic change, and fostering inclusive and supportive team culture.
